Estes Viper RC Airplane with Motion Sensing Control

The Viper R/C Jet Plane delivers the thrill of flying at an affordable price. With a powerful two-rotor design and a motion auto-sensing controller that lets you turn the plane by merely turning your wrist, kids ages 12 and older will have a ton of fun maneuvering the plane and performing aerial twists and turns.

Once you get comfortable flying, you can learn to do tricks. View larger.

The motion-sensing controller lets you maneuver the plane by tilting left or right. View larger.
What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Plane really flies, rechargeable design, easy to repair.

The Bad: Steep learning curve, plane inevitably takes on damage, requires a very large open field.

In a Nutshell: Radio-controlled plane can fly and perform tricks but requires a lot of practice and a large grassy space.
At a Glance

Ages: 12 and up
Requires: 6 AA batteries, large grassy space, packing tape and glue to repair the inevitable damage.
Smart, Lightweight Design
The airplane is made of foam and requires some construction using the included pieces of tape. It took us about 10 minutes to assemble plane together and apply its stickers. It's not the most impressive plane to look it, but it well designed to fly. We inserted six AA batteries into the controller, and using the controller, we charged the battery in the plane, which took about an hour. Blinking LEDs let us know when the charging was complete. When it was ready, we took the plane out to our neighborhood park.

Like a Real Plane, Piloting Takes Practice
Our first attempt at flying was met with resounding failure -- a beeline straight into the ground! After checking to see if the plane was all right (it was), we tried again. Another crash. It took a few tries before we got it stay in the air, and then we had several adjustments to make in order to get the plane flying as we desired.

As stated in the instructions, bending various parts up and down helped steady the plane, make it climb, or keep it from veering left or right. Along the way, we broke a wing, sliced through the body, bent a tip, and did further damage. Fortunately, fixing the plane was as simple as applying some packing tape. The plane didn't look as good, but flew just fine.

When we finally got the hang of it, it became obvious that our park was not big enough to hold the plane. Simply put, you need a very large open space to fully enjoy this toy. The instruction booklet recommended a soccer field, which is not always easily accessible, and not always empty when you get there. Fortunately for us, once we had the room to maneuver the plane, turning it gently left and right and performing tricks was a piece of cake.

Motion-Detecting Remote Control
The Viper R/C Jet Plane uses a remote control unit that looks like a flight stick with a trigger. The remote control itself is one piece, and to turn the plane you tilt the entire unit to the left or right; a motion-sensor inside detects whether you are tilting a lot or a little, and the plane turns accordingly. The plane has two rotors, one on each side, which are controlled by the trigger. When you pull on the trigger all the way, the rotors are at full strength and the plane climbs. With the trigger halfway, the rotors pulse and the plane stays steady without climbing. We wished there was some way of gauging the halfway point, but over time we were able to get a feel for the remote.

Overall, we found the plane to be great fun, but you must be willing to invest a fair amount of training time with it. Even though the plane is designed for ease of use, it still has a very steep learning curve. We spent an hour crashing the plane and repairing it before we were able to exert some control over its many functions. But if you are willing to put in the work, and if you have access to a big field, you'll love this toy.

Expert Author Aidan James
Maybe you've seen those RC hobbyists flying their aircraft, performing incredible aerobatics and thought you might like to get involved but be aware you are unlikely to succeed by just splashing out and spending your hard earned cash on the most impressive and advanced model in the shop.
Performing those stunts and even just flying your aircraft comfortably and confidently takes practice, sometimes lots of it. You might be better advised in a less complicated trainer airplane to start with while you get to understand just how much concentration is really required to control a model airplane, then you can consider moving up to the bigger league.
Buying and flying your first radio control airplane should be a good experience that encourages you into the hobby. It is often recommended that beginners learn to fly with a high-wing trainer. What is it? A high-wing airplane is one with the wing on top of the fuselage, a build which allows for slower and gentler flights and fairly forgiving of control errors so making them ideal for new RC pilots.
High-wing trainers are a great way to learn the basic skills before trying faster low-wing airplanes which require considerable skill to fly safely. You can buy trainer airplanes in an almost ready to fly kit, requiring just some assembly to get going, or as fully assembled airplanes that just need their batteries charged.
Try to look for trainer airplanes that are specially built for durability and which can be easily fixed because like all beginner RC pilots you will have a small number of  'imperfect landings'. Easily repairable construction means you can be back in the air quickly having hopefully learnt from your experience. Airplanes with tricycle style landing gear are easier to control on the ground than those with low tails (sometimes known as tail-draggers) so take that into consideration when making your purchase too.
Don't worry too much about the power and electronics of RC for now. There are any number of combinations of power units and radio controllers possible but your first airplane will have that side of things all matched up for you. The guys at the hobby store will explain all you want if you have any questions.
There is no substitute for expert advice. Try to visit a radio control flying area and observe the airplanes, maybe wait until aircraft have landed before asking questions, though you'll notice the RC hobbyists, like most other hobbyists, are happy to chat. Then you're probably ready to go to a good hobby store and talk with the guys there. They will be happy to help you make the right choice, it's in their interest to encourage you and they really want to encourage newcomers into their world, the world of radio control airplanes.
My thanks to Hobby Heroes for helping me with this article, they give excellent beginner service and have some excellent Radio Control Airplanes for beginners.

Tips on flying remote control airplanes

People who have never flown remote control aircraft before, perhaps a little hesitant to do so for fear of crashing their new toys. The following tips will help a safer when piloting remote control aircraft.

1. Never fly a very windy day. Determine the approximate wind speed by tying a tape to the end of the transmitter antenna. Keep controller parallel with the ground. If the Ribbon is parallel with the ground, it is too windy. If the Ribbon is less than 30 degrees, is it okay to fly.

2. determine wind direction by throwing a few bits of grass or light materials in the air. Flying remote control airplanes in the wind for optimal performance.

3. If the launch by hand, can a friend start plane for you so you can keep your hands on the controls at all times.

4. Practice flying in an oval-shaped patterns, to keep all the turns in one direction. When you are comfortable with doing so, fly in the opposite direction, also in an oval pattern. Once you've mastered both directions, you can try flying in a figure 8 pattern.

5. When landing remote control airplanes, first note the wind direction to land in the wind. Reduce power slowly, allowing the aircraft to almost glide on their own. Cut off the throttle when it is 5 m above the ground.

6. Find and learn from an instructor or experienced flyers. You might also consider joining a flying club. Some also has a club trainer plane, so you can try before you buy your own aircraft. Club members will also be able to give useful advice.

7. Fly in wide open spaces. Sites with a lot of people, such as parks, is not perfect for beginners, as you might hurt someone.

8. read your model manual. Usually various remote control airplane models, features and technical equipment.

9. Crashes are inevitable. Don't beat yourself, if you can't get it right the first few times. Just keep practicing to improve your knowledge of flying.

Above all, have fun!

5 Steps to your first Radio controlled aircraft

Apparatus for controlling radio for beginners

WORLDS LARGEST RC AIRCRAFT

Building remote control airplane that Rock

There are no more exciting experience than with a bunch of components integrated together in a flying remote control airplanes – especially if you do it all yourself. Course Building an RC model involved more than build most other types of model aircraft — presumably only scale models can beat them.

Most hobbyists don't really remote control airplane from scratch. It is too difficult because of the electronics you need. Of course, if you are a radio enthusiast or an engineer, you might be able to create the system itself, but most will not do so.

That is why there are kits. In fact, the almost-ready-to-fly and ready to fly model aircraft appeared all RC models was sold just like that – in kit form.

Types of kits
All kits are similar – they contain parts that you should build together. What is different is the material parts. One of the best choices wood -is usually balsa which is light and strong.

Materials such as plastic, fiberglass and foam is now getting more popular. I have not yet seen a kit with metal parts, but some very light metal could be a good option.

When you select a kit, check out how it is cut. Laser-cut kits are easy to mount and the models that are created from them are valuable. Other types of kits are machine cut and die cut. This is usually in wooden Kit and they may require some extra work on your space before you can mount the plane.

The tools required
Some plastic Kit easy laser-cut does not require any tools except a turnscrew, and some glue. You may need to be fairly small and precious turnscrew, however, especially for electronics and engine.

If you are working with machine-cut or die-cut wooden parts, sand paper to fine body, wings and other parts.

The glue are often kits but if it is not, or if you have to purchase further, select the appropriate glues for your materials. This the Carpenter's yellow glue is best for wood, while silicone or canopy glue is better for kits, plastic and fiberglass.

In the end, you will want to paint your remote control aircraft. Plastics Kit will often already painted, but it is never with wood. Before painting, you can use a technique called dry-brush. This creates a realistic looking model aircraft. Drought sometimes brushing and painting is the most important things to do if you would like your airplane dress.

The main characteristic of the remote-controlled aircraft, of course, is that they can fly and you can control their escape. So if you pass your kit, you must be careful not to disturb some fine details of electronics or engine.
